Gerhard Stercl started Senior Living in August of 1998. It always had been a dream of his to publish a periodical. Gerhard started his delivery career with the Leader Post and in 2024 is still delivering papers. After High School he was looking for work and a job was landed at Saskatchewan Government Printing in the Pre Press Department. After a stellar career at SGPC, Gerhard moved on. He tried sales and other ventures but the lure of having his own paper was still in the back of his mind. In the spring of 1998, Gerhard was having breakfast with his good friend Wendel, and the discussion went from cars to holidays to sports and eventually ended talking about work etc. Gerhard wanted to move on from his current job, but wasn’t sure where to go. Wendel suggested he try starting his own paper. That was the beginning of Senior Living. In August of 1998 Senior Living was introduced to Regina. Gerhard formulated a game/business plan and pounded the pavement for businesses to advertise in Senior Living. The early years were a struggle and Gerhard took on part time jobs to supplement the meagre Senior Living income. But his persistence paid off and Senior Living became a viable publication that has sustained Gerhard and his family and continues on in 2024 and God willing into 2025.
The content of Senior Living is its strength. A combination of ‘Humour’, ‘Advertising’, ‘Articles Specific To Seniors’, ‘Saskatchewan Government News Releases’, ‘Recipes’, Classified Ads and the ever popular ‘Gerhard’s Opinions’ on page one and more are what make Senior Living what it is today. Has Senior Living changed over the years? Of course it has, but the core mission is the same, to bring humour, information, articles and advertising that the main stream media are unable to do, specifically tours and other needs that seniors are looking for. Senior Living has served a niche for Seniors for more than 26 years.
Gerhard loves what he is doing and the response from the readership of Senior Living makes it all worthwhile. Gerhard plans on publishing Senior Living as long as God gives him the health to carry on.
Will Senior Living change in 2025? I sure hope so. This new Website will make it easier to access the information that Senior Living wants to get to its readership and advertisers. Such as advertising rates and a more user friendly ‘Subscription Form’ for those who want the personal touch of Senior Living delivered by Canada Post.
Thank You and God Bless
